Boneripper – World Ablaze
21st January 2025Total Hate – Forthcoming Age Of The Reaper
Label: Sure Shot Worx / Release Date: 29th November 2024
In many ways a love letter to the old-school Black Metal scene of the nineties, German quintet Total Hate sprung into existance a decade after the fact, encompassing straight off the bat, all the things that made the genre noteworthy (barring the low-grade and gritty recordings – Total Hate, being a somewhat latecomer to the scene, seems to have had access to better equipment):
Low growls, groaning, heavily distorted guitars and powerful drums dominate the soundscape whereever the bas isn’t covering everything in a thick, throbbing audio-onslaught. Just the way it was originally intended.
The five members of the band have, inbetween the lot of them, experience from eighteen different musical acts (not counting those where several band members overlap in the same bands) – That, combined with twenty-five years worth of experience under their current moniker, has been proven to be excellent nuturing ground for old-and-gritty Black Metal. The most recent proof? Last years Full-length release Forthcoming Age Of The Reaper, an eleven tracks long (if you count the Urgehal cover) sensory assault worthy of later-era Gorgoroth and mid-era Darkthrone.
All in all, one of those records where there is little else to say other than it is clearly a labour of love by fans of the genre, for fans of the genre – Meaning that they offer very little new to the table, but everything that they do offer in the forty-six minutes worth of string-and-drums exercise, they execute to perfection. Which is hardly a surprise, considering that this record constitutes their sixth Full-length under this moniker and their ninth release overall.
