Primitive Warfare – Extinction Protocol
14th November 2024Steinras – Steinras
Label: Soulseller / Release Date: 4th July 2014
Steinras is a Norwegian Black Metal duo, one that I have been having some difficulty finding information regarding. Their official FaceBook account (which is the only source I have been able to dig up with my feeble online skills) do not seem to go back all that far so for the sake of this scribble I will assume that the band was formed sometime at the beginning of this year – Not that it matters all that much, since we are here to discuss their musical prowess, not their origin after all.
Musically, Steinras are digging deep into their cultural heritage, channelling their inner 1349 and Taake to great effect – Expertly empowered by the wise decision to perform all lyrics in all ten tracks in their native Norwegian, a language that lends itself well to the cold, menacing growls of the far north.
At the risk of sounding like a broken record (well, intentionally so at the very least), Steinras, the self-titled debut of the Norwegian duo is everything you would expect from a modern Black Metal act: Fast-paced, evocative riffs, deep, guttural growls and even a few almost epic-sounding epochs (“Crawer Of The Crypt” in particular springs to mind in this regard). So, in short, a ten tracks long, forty minutes spanning deep dive into contemporary Black Metal served directly from one of the progenitor-nations of said genre (specifically Second Wave, since that is the sub-genre it seems to be drawing the most inspiration). Definitely a hard act to follow, I will be keeping an eye on this one.
