Sordide is a French Black Metal trioe that has recently pierced the veil into their second decade of existance, gracing the world with five Full-length records since their inception back in 2013. These were released in a consistent pace, roughly two to three years inbetween – A consistency that I am pleased to see they have put in some effort to maintaining, which results in their newest release Ainsi finit le jour (French for ‘Thus Ends The Day’) later this month.
Sordide is a band that I have always found interesting when compared to their other French genre-kinsmen – While their contemporaries usually end up creating grand music through the einherent elegance of their language coupled with a deep atmosphere to submerge their listeners into the feel of their countrys history, Sordide instead take on a far more brutal approach – Something that is porbably most noticeable through their lyrical themes including both their native France and anti-fascism: A combination that lends itself very well to the punk aestethic from which Black Metal originally was forged. The band members know this and leans onto this lever hard.
And the end result? Fifty-four minutes of dirty, anger-inducing, barely contained rage at the state of the world that would make even Napalm Death proud on their darkest days. Honestly, the music presented throughout these nine tracks are almost more akin to First Wave than Second due to this approach as well as the guttural, near-growls perpetually spouted by the lead singer.
In short, France has a historical background for rebellion, violent and otherwise, but always efficient in some way, shape or form – See the beheading of the nobles, the street protests when their government threatened to raise their retirement age or even their firefighters setting themselves ablase to ward off people from interferring with their protests. They are a strong people who refuse to submit to oppression and Ainsi finit le jour could very well serve as the soundtrack as far as I am concerned.
Recommended for fans of Napalm Death and Malevolentia, as the debit track “Des Feux Plus Forts” hopefullly will attest to (French for ‘Stronger Fires’). Enjoy!
