Rheinkaos - All My Being is a Dark Verse - 77%

Rheinkaos is founded in 2007 by guitarist Dimitrios B. and vocalist Savaoth, drawing influence from avant-garde pioneers like Dødheimsgard & Ulver, and progressive legends Fates Warning. In 2008, the band self-released their debut demo, featuring Gogo Melone from Luna Obscura on vocals. In 2010 they even recorded their first full-length, but due to budget constraints the album remained unfinished.

In 2024, Rheinkaos, now comprised of Dimitrios B. (guitars, pads, keys), Savaoth (vocals) and Thodoris Miskas (guitars), decided to re-work on two of their latest two tracks “Beta Religion” and “The Commencement Fear”. It resulted in this almost 20 minutes long EP entitled, All my Being is Dark Verse.

First, I would like to say a few words on the title for this EP, All my Being is Dark Verse is just a great title for the musical content we hear on this two-tracker. It’s still out-of-the-box avant-garde and experimental black metal in the vein of the aforementioned Dødheimsgard, Ulver and Fates Warning, but also the likes of Enslaved, Satyricon and similar acts who’re not afraid to include the keyboards, electronics and cosmic sounds. This particular combination of various instruments and the versatile vocals (mix of harsh and clean) are blending so well together.

As the case is with their more established colleagues playing this sub-genre, the gentlemen from Rheinkaos often add orchestral instruments, synthesizers and samplers while incorporating elements of experimental, industrial, and progressive music. Thus, the music is intense and aggressive, with fast-paced blast beats and a mix of harsh and clean vocals.

Two songs from this EP are both characterized by unconventional song structures, dissonant harmonies, and use of unconventional instruments and sound effects. As far as I understand it, lyrically it features complex and abstract lyrics that explore philosophical and occult themes. The atmosphere these guys create on All my Being is Dark Verse is quite engaging, and the songwriting is quirky and progressive. Yalamas V. (recording engineer) and Njal Frode Lie (mastering) are responsible for the production, while the beautiful cover was created by Vadim Karasov.

On a final note; despite the extended duration of the two tracks re-mastered for the occasion, it feels interesting, engaging and over before you even notice. Fingers crossed to hear some more from Rheinkaos in the near future, because there’re not many visionary metal acts like them on the scene today.
