Räum – Emperor Of The Sun - 68%

Räum is the brain-child of four talented belgian musicians who spent what seems to be the majority of the COVID-lockdown creating, shaping and honing their own frustrations regarding the emptiness and self-destructive nature of mankind, coupled with their near-unmatched talent for beauty in art – Said art in this case taking the shape of Post-Black Metal of the highest order.

Their first dredge into this miasma of nihilism was fairly well-received so, spurred on by whatever fuels their talent, their Full-length was followed by another earlier this year. This time carrying the title Emperor Of The Sun.

This newest endeavour into the human condition encompasses seven individual tracks, adding up to forty-four minutes of continuous, disharmonioius chaos the way only Post-Black Metal seems to be capable of – By seamlessly combining the sheer raw aggression and distorted instruments of traditional Black Metal with the more contemporary concepts; Most noticeably that of cleaner recordings as well as mastering, a healthy dose of discord and a more… Shall we say, restrained approach.

The end result is as engaging as it is full of energy – Räum definitely feels like they are created to be a live act, adding to their overall nihilistic view due to the irony of such a band seeing the light of day at the height of a global lockdown.

Nevertheless, tracks such as ”Eclipse Of The Empyreal Dawn”, to me at least, deems it worth the wait for any fans of Au-Dessus, Deluge or early-era Deathspell Omega.
