Now that’s what I call a proper progressive music! To be more accurate, I’m talking of Past And Secrets, a progressive metal project of guitarist/composer, Yohan Delasalle. The band hails from Lille (France) and his new album is an instrumental five-tracker EP entitled, Another Day, Another Time. Each of the five tracks are featuring different guitar players, so in the following I’ll make a short introduction to every one of them as their contribution is vital part of this project.
EP opens with “Above Us” featuring Greg Schollaert on guitars. On the following one called “Come On Board” (listen to the song below) it’s Radek Stojda who’s responsible for taking care of the guitar parts. Middle song “World” features Brian Bajak, while “Sleep Well, Little Child” sees Mika Dienst taking over guitar duties. Final one, “Together On A Mountain” features the Italian guitarist Demetrio Scopelliti, where his immense and powerful playing closes this five-tracker EP in a great manner!
Prior to listening to Another Day Another Time (for multiple times), I couldn’t imagine so much happening on just 22-minutes, which is the length of this EP. Each piece from Another Day, Another Time is a captivating source of inspiration and listening to Another Day, Another Time felt as being transported into another dimension, into a realm where the artist delves into topics close to his heart, but also something anyone of us of a certain age can relate to; life, death, a new world-view, past & present memories, and even future visions.
Despite of the lack of the lyrical content (it’s an instrumental piece of music) they display a multiple aspects and different sounds, creating this unforgettable sonic experience. Thus, we can mostly hear some pounding, heavy and catchy riffs, filled with some dynamic percussions, soaring samples and blistering solos from his friends on the guitars. All these different influences and additions to their sound help creating this distinctive atmosphere with beautiful soundscapes that are the central features in the project’s sound. I feel as it’s unfair to point out any single track as being the best of this EP, as I think that each individual track is distinct and a testament to the artist’ ability to weave a rich tapestry of sound, creating songs that are interesting, adventorous, varied, progressive and extremely enjoyable, even if you’re not the biggest worshipper of progressive and instrumental music.
The production duties are handled by the project’s founder, where he ensures that each element is given space to shine. Apart from the equally fitting and representative cover art, another good thing about Another Day, Another Time is the evocative storytelling, and each contributor’s ability to create some intricate compositions, that serve as a reflection of the human experience, with all complexities of life, with our hopes, different fears, strugles and emotions. Definitely an interesting sonic adventure, as the music on Another Day, Another Time showcases the extreme technical proficiency of each of the performers.
Join Past And Secrets on its new journey, a unique blend of energy, ambiance, joy, melancholy, rage and tranquility, across five exclusive tracks presented on Another Day Another Time. Highly recommended for fans of proper alliance between atmospheric, ambient and djent sounds with a massive progressive touch as well. Don’t miss out on this discovery, and don’t hesitate to immerse yourself quickly in the world of Past And Secrets, and a mastermind behind the project, Mr. Yohan Delasalle.
