6th May 2024Mordum – In Peccato Mortali
Label: Necroeucharist Productions / Release date: 7th October 2023
From Košice, Slovakia, hails a death metal trio going under the moniker of Mordum. This name might sound familiar to some of you, as the band has existed since 1991, with a break from 2000 to 2015. In 2017 they released their first full-length (until then only a couple of Demo releases) entitled And What Is the Truth?. Few months ago out partners in crime, Necroeucharist Productions, released their second full-length called, In Peccato Mortali (translation; mortal/deadly sin). This limited edition has been released on a cassette of 100 copies in two colour versions; black (50) & red (50). In Peccato Mortali contains 10 tracks, with five tracks on each side, of an un-compromising and skull-crashing death metal.
The overall sound on In Peccato Mortali is musically characterized by fast, distorted, down-tuned, and sometimes palm-muted guitar instrumentation, growled and screamed vocals, and hyper-fast, blast beat drumming. The lyrics on In Peccato Mortali fit the music so whell rhythmically that they complement it perfectly. The album opens with the longiest track named “Avaritia”; featuring a violent and juddering riff, astonishing drum fills and manic-sounding vocals. An absolutely massive way to open the album. “Souls” is a bit different track, mainly so because it’s a very short instrumental song. “Acedia” is another majestic song that marks a real high point of the album. On “Invidia” the guys continues with some genuine, brutal, ball & skull-crashing death metal. The closing track is a Xibalba (L.A.-based hardcore band) cover called “Brain Feedback”, a great track to close what is certainly not a perfect album, but is a strong and well-executed record, a worthy addition to the band’s catalogue, without doubt.
There’re numerous great moments during these 38 minutes of what at times felt as sonic assault. The sound is rotten, dark and massive, like in the golden era of death metal. I also like the cover artwork, which accurately describes what’s happening on the record – morbid, uncompromising, heavy, yet also technical death metal.
Sometimes I wonder why we still like old death metal so much, but listening to this Mordum’s second MC, In Peccato Mortali gave me an answer I was looking for. It’s a piece of honest, well-executed and unstoppable in its in-your-face approach. Esp. recommended for fans of old-school death metal and bands like Morbid Angel, Obituary, Montrosity, Deicide and similar Florida-style death metal.
This red cassette contains 38 minutes of uncompromising, heavy and technical death metal, accompanied by an eight-page booklet and a badge to go with it! As mentioned before, this limited edition In Peccato Mortali cassette been has released in 100 copies – only a handful of copies left, so make sure to order yours while it lasts.
