It’s not often we feature metal bands from Asia. Today we make an exception with a proming young band that won ‘Wacken Metal Battle India 2022’, and represented India at ‘Wacken Open Air 2022’. The moniker of the band is Moral Putrefaction, an old school death metal trio from Chennai, India. The band released their self-titled debut album in May 2024. It’s a follow-up to their 2019 Scum of the Earth demo release.

Moral Putrefaction contains seven tracks of brutal, and dark old-school death metal. As soon as you press the play button, the opening track, “Divided” (listen to the song below), greets you with this raw and fast sound of all instruments, and some deep throaty growls. Thus, throughout the record, the song’s lyrics are about the different ways people are divided and oppressed in their country and around the world. That’s perfectly depicted in this opening song. Following track is called “Serpent’s Gaze” where the band uses slightly different opening with some melodic riffs, before it explodes into another sonic assault with tramendous riffing that blends elements of both death and black metal. This song turned into another fuious and extreme metal, portraying both extreme and heavy yet their technical prowess. In other words, the band is not afraid to mix different elements in order to make it more varied and unique. “Colonial Genocide” is one track taken from the aforementioned 2019 demo, that has been re-recorded and expanded by seven seconds. It is another awesome death metal anthem that features some relentless and blasting drum work, supplemented by some typical death metal growls and masteful bass lines. On “Scum of the Earth” they demonstrate that they’re able to add even more variation to their sound, with a main cutting edge riff carrying the song. On next song “Divine Retribution” the Chennai-trio shows that they’re capable of creating some atmospheric tunes with almost doom opening. In the middle of the song it takes another turn delivering some energetic, fast and razor-sharp riffing. The sixth song, “Sins Of Our Fathers” features an over-a-minute guitar solo instrumental with an old-school haunting atmosphere. One that gives you goosebumps. The album is ending on a high note with a banger called, “Beneath Saffron Skies”. Once again we can hear excellent drumming, deep and cutting-edge riffing, amazing vocals and few additional elements of a technical death metal.

The production on Moral Putrefaction is top-notch, perfectly capturing their sound’s raw energy and intensity, while the atmosphere is haunting and epic, just as an old-school death metal opus should sound!

This dark yet beautiful artwork leaves a lasting impression, as it is representative of the band’s overall theme and sound, where each track exposes the horrors of colonialism, religious extremism, caste discrimination, political corruption and other abnormalities in their country.

All in all, Moral Putrefaction is an unique and captivating listening experience that is not to be missed, especially if you’re a fan of old-school death metal and bands as Morbid Angel, Immolation, Bloodbath, Hate Eternal, Duying Fetus, Gorguts and Deicide.
