Yes, you are exactly right – it’s another extreme metal act from Poland. Thus I’m thinking of Intra Nigrum, atmospheric black metal project from Poland. Their third album, entitled Logos, was released by Putrid Cult, label known for their black metal releases.

Logos is comprised of eight lengthy ambient & atmospheric (black metal) tracks. Sometimes it can be hard to say when ambient ends and when atmospheric metal starts, but in general this band insporates both. Therefore we can hear typical atmospheric black metal with its extended focus on atmosphere and sound textures, and on the other side its the focus on creating dark and ambient atmospheres, with dreamy and ethereal textures. Meanwhile, according to the band; their music is ‘inspired by vistas of nocturnal sky and the passage of time.’ Lyrical themes dwell on the subjects of a night, time and darkness. At first spin these eight songs might seem hard to differentiate one from another, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing!

Tracklist:

01. Midnight Shadow
02. Touching Raindrops
03. Above Night’s Altar
04. A Veil of Fog
05. In the Cold Interior of Words
06. Shemreh
07. Shuddering Star
08. From Blood And Blue Sky

From the very first riff, and following deep black metal growls, on the opening song “Midnight Shadow”, we are being bombarded by some overwhelming sounds, combined with hazy nostalgic phrases. On the second song named “Touching Raindrops” the band is incorporating extended use of the ambient black metal elements, which is then often mixed with distorted & fuzzy guitars and harsh & deep, yet sporadic distant shrieking vocals.

The viscous atmosphere, combined with melodic and dreamy melodies, and this time more understandable and singable, listenable and reachable vocals, are some of the characteristics of the third track, “Above Night’s Altar”. The following “A Veil of Fog” is retaining the grim atmosphere of black metal, but this time like with a dungeon touch that celebrates the worlds of fantasy, all delivered at a much slower pace. This piece also features some beautiful singing. Like the rest of the tracks, “In the Cold Interior of Words“ is mysterious and atmospheric song where typical black metal riffs are suppressed, giving a space for more ambient and dreamy passages. Next follows the shortest track from Logos, one named “ Shemreh” that serves as a nice bridge, while still being very deep in exploring its dark insensitivity when it comes to instrumentalization. “Shuddering Star” features some intense and monumental guitar passages, while the clsoing “From Blood And Blue Sky” is another very carefully balanced song, ending this lengthy record on the high note.

My two favourite tracks are “A Veil Of Fog”, a track that enchants with its authenticity and solid performance, and its obscure successor, “In The Cold Interior Of Words” where the band play some sinister parts.

The guys from Intra Nigrum certainly did not intend to reinvent the wheel, but I still like their mysterious, expressive and non-obvious atmospheric sound enclosed in blackness. Logos is the kind of album that grows with each new listening. Even the cover artwork fits the climate and overall mood of the album perfectly. Recommended for worshippers of Summoning, Burzum, Drudkh, Zørza, Agalloch, Panopticon, Saor etc.
