29th November 2023Ifryt – Płuca
Label: Godz ov War Productions / Release date: 12th May 2023
What we have here is a Polish one-man project called Ifryt. Line-up consists of Bartosz ‘Kuna’ Mokry (guitars, bass & drums), which means that all music & lyrics are created by Bartosz ‘Kuna’ Mokry, while the vocals are delivered by Przemysław ‘Szrama’ Kuskowski, and guitar solos by Kamil Smolarz.
It wasn’t even necessary for me to search for translation for the title for his new release since I knew that ‘Płuca’ means ‘Lungs’ in almost every Slavic and East-European language. Even if I didn’t know that, alone by looking at the front-cover, one can easily a what’s all about.
Płuca contains only three tracks, which are obviously quite lengthy, almost 10-minute-mark-tracks. At first, esp. after hearing backing vocals, and a starting riff, in the opening “Klucz Salomona” I thought it was some kind of NWOBHM or/and more traditional heavy metal, but I was wrong. It’s only the starting riff that is reminiscent of early British heavy metal and bands like Iron Maiden, but soon after it gets more aggressive and dirty black metal, with snarling growls, speedy drumming, furious riffing, blazing tempo and wild solos towards the end of the song.
Next track is called “Kona Allah” (translated from Arabic to ‘We Were God’) and it is a more typical black metal affair, with some clear early Celtic Frost/Bathory/ Darkthrone vibes about it. Despite of the fact that it’s more black metal orientated track, it still has many tempo shifts while incorporating a few different influences beyong black metal. It contains this somehow odd tempo shift halfway through the song, before blasting back to more traditional and speedy black metal towards the end of the song. Apart from this, one can also hear additional angry spoken-word and cleaner vocals, all delivered in their native Polish.
Epic 10-minute album closing track, 10-minute “Straszne Rzeczy” (“Terrible Things”) is an utterly wild song, with almost too much variations and dynamics, that it’s almost imposible to describe it. It probably best shows a diverse nature of this release, with a mix of styles, blending jazzy prog in with some rhymes, spoken word vocals, thrash, speed and black metal sounds.
Speaking in general terms; Płuca is mainly rooted in black metal, but always stretching it, reaching out to new territories and crossing beyond the traditional boundaries of black metal. Make no mistake, Płuca is for all those that like their (black) metal vicious, extreme and brutal, but at the same time varied, beautiful and epic.
It is tremendosuly recommended to take Płuca and have a proper listening experience. Let yourself immerse in this otherwordly and pretty adventurous journey. For further information on this particular release visit https://godzovwarproductions.bandcamp.com/album/p-uca
