Idiot Child – The First Breath Is The Beginning Of Death

Idiot Child are a five piece noise rock/sludge metal band from neighbouring Malmö, Sweden. The band currently consists of Melker Engelberger (drums), Isak Svensson (bass) Jonas Stojiljkovic (guitar), Oliver Dahl (guitar) Mikey Engelberger (vocals & electronics). Recently the quintet recorded/released their second full-length entitled The First Breath Is The Beginning Of Death. It’s been released via Vancouver (Canada)-based micro label Bent Window Records, dedicated to the Swedish underground scene.

The First Breath Is The Beginning Of Death features eleven tracks of what’s been labelled as ‘violent, nihilistic sludge metal & noise rock’. I can see where this description is coming from, as their sound is obviously chaotic, fatal and violent, creating this unforgivable sonic assault on all the senses. It features some harsh and challenging sounds; filthy yet with an unique groove and a very clear hardcore punk edge. The noise created here is a characteristic of their music, but it doesn’t define their overall sound. Thus one can hear numerous spoken-word parts, soloing, almost clean singing, shouting etc.

Everything about this release was done in the best D.I.Y.-spirit – from the recording, mastering and finally a distribution of the materials. Another point worth mentioning is the cover of Sepultura classic “Attitude” as the closing track on the album. The production is thick, soft, muddy and still very listenable. Cover art is also created by themselves and if you listen to the opening song “Stalemate” (listen to the track below), you’ll understand why it perfectly fits to the sound one can hear on the record.

Knowing how many obstacles and financial difficulties they had while trying to record The First Breath Is The Beginning Of Death, I’m just happy it finally got released and with a satisfying result. Esp. recommended for fans of Eyehategod, Brainbombs, Today Is The Day, Noothgrush, Goatsblood, Dystopia, Unsane and similar acts.
