25th February 2025Hell Militia – Canonisation Of The Foul Spirit

Label: Darkness Shall Rise / Release Date: 27th February 2025 (Re-release)
Hell Militia is a self-proclaimed ‘Necro Black Metal’ act consisting of five members – Two of which being founding members dating back to the bands inception twenty-four years ago, and the latter three new-comers that have been plucked from other parts of the French Black Metal genre – The most notable of these being the new guitarist that I recognize from performing live with the likes of Aosoth, Pensees Nocturne and the like. That being said, at a glance probably the most noteworthy change is the inclusion of a new lead singer, of Thagirion fame. And seemingly both to prove that the core of Hell Militia is unchanged as well as show off their new composition, the five musicians deemed it prudent to re-release their debut Full-length record Canonisation Of The Foul Spirit for the masses to enjoy.
While I cannot specifically state how it differs from the original as I have sadly never had a chance to give it a spin, I will say that this version is very true to the sound, feel and approach I recall from Black Metal bands of the early 2000’s – Heavy emphasis on raw aggression, gravelling vocals, distorted guitars and blast beat drums; Although it should be noted that the mixing seems to have been cleaned up a bit, drawing more focus to the new vocals as well as giving it a somewhat ‘newer’ feel – Not a choice I would have made personally, but I do understand the sentiment. And it does have the added benefit of distinguishing it from its near-identical predecessor, even more than the added secret track did by its own inclusion.
All in all, froty-five minutes spread across eleven tracks of pure, unadulterated satanic-inspired Black Metal straight from the turn of the millennium, just the way I personally like it.
