Label: Self released / Release date: 11th December 2023
Diabeł Boruta is a character from Polish mythology, folklore and literature, associated with the Polish town of Łęczyca. Meanwhile it is also a moniker for a Rzeszów-based quartet consisting of following members; Paweł Leniart (bass & vokal), Konrad Peszek (guitar) Marcin Habaj (guitar) & Lubor Vanek (drums).
The history of the band Diaboł Boruta dates back to 2010. Ever since its formation the band has been playing a mix of captivating folk metal with minor traditional heavy metal elements. Their latest release entitled Byłem Ognim Dębem is a compilation album where they re-recorded best songs from their discography (five albums!), without folk instruments, in a thrash/heavy metal style. In other words, if you know the band then you’ll probably also know all of the songs from Byłem Ognim Dębem but this time in different guitar arrangements. It suits the band very well, showing another side of their creative work. Having said that, the melodies that maintain the connection to more folk elements have been preserved.
Almost all 10 songs on Byłem Ognim Dębem are pure entertainment being heavy, danceable and headbanging captivating tracks that will make most people happy and exited. Despite of the fact that most songs are lengthy there’s no boredom here due to the variety in their sound. All the lyrics are in their native Polish language, but when paired with somewhat guttural & harsh vocals, I think fits this music perfectly.
The leader of the band, Paweł Leniart, is responsible for recording, mixing and mastering, so production is much better than expected from this kind of a self-release. Equally beautiful, and very much representative of their style, cover artwork was done by Maciej Skrzypek & Hania Francus. Recommended for fans of Eluveitie, Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Alestorm, Arkona and similar folk/heavy metal acts.
