Brüdny Skürwiel (Polish for ‘Dirty Motherfuckers’) is a moniker for a Polish black/thrash quartet. It’s also a pretty good sign that their sound isn’t going to be pretentious. Thus, I’m talking of their debut album entitled Silesian Bastards. Nine original tracks and Gospel Of The Horns cover named “Powers of Darkness”, are more or less a nice tribute to metal forged in the 80s and 90s. In other words, we can hear a destroying mix of black-, thrash metal with a rock’n’roll touch. When I mentioned the late 80s and early 90s it’s mostly due to the organic and uncluttered sound, where the whole album is a completely live feed, just vocals were added later. It feels sincere, where according to the band ‘no triggering, no step recording, no overdubs and no metronome were used on this record’.

Once again special thanks to the Catholic Church (and religion in general) for being an endless source of fucking badass lyrical inspiration for many of the country’s extreme metal bands. Polish extreme metal has a tradition of taking a dig at the Catholic Church in the country. Brüdny Skürwiel is no exception, and if you’re up for some black/thrash metal – inspired by dirty rock’n’roll – then this is the place to go. Put differently; the lyrical content is, exactly what you would expect, vulgar and full of hatred for religious symbols, perfectly depicted in titles such as “We Burn Your Crucifix”, “End of All Faith” or “The Last Raping of Christ”. Other signs that we are dealing with blasphemous and anti-religious content are in the cover art for this album.

All ten tracks on Silesian Bastards are filled with some growling, barking and alcohol drained vocals, razor-sharp, cutting & thrashy riffs, feat. fast and almost psychedelic soloing, furious drums and pulsating bass, all in order to destroy the listeners ears. They deliver some energetic songwriting, with great amount of heaviness which results in this raw and aggressive atmosphere. Meanwhile, what I enjoyed most is the feeling of sincerity, energy and uncompromising attitude, these four men deliver here.

Silesian Bastards is one of the best thrash/black metal albums that has appeared in Poland in this decade so far. If you’re ready for a kick of adrenaline rush, look no further as Silesian Bastards will fix you up. Recommended for worshippers of old-school furious and dirty metal, and a must-have in every metalhead’ collection.
