All music reviews are subjective. On that note, all the sub-genres of heavy metal, speed/thrash metal, I’m a harsh critic. An unfair situation for modern speed metal bands. Why? My early teens, I was there for the second wave of groups circulating the San Francisco and Los Angeles scenes. L.A., underground, had to yield to Hollywood hair metal bands. An injustice. In S.F. the scene was the dominant metal voice. Testament, Forbidden, Machine Head and a score more groups rocked my friends and I on the daily.
Apotropaico from Spain is a solid group. Their EP, Reborning has it’s electric moments of metal thrash. The musicianship is excellent, and technically sound. Being a tough to please sort, this one just isn’t eliciting the speed metal fury my arrogant ears demand.
If you like speed metal, ignore my diatribe, give them a listen. You just might think Apotropaico is the best shredding going down. Rocking the dance scene on Ibiza, the metal quartet set their own rules on what music is all about. I appreciate the juxtaposition of a metal band defiant on the pop glitter image of the sunny Spanish island.
The album art is a dose of Eddie and a lot of early Dungeons & Dragons monster art. Will I keep an ear peeled for Apotropaico, absolutely. https://www.facebook.com/apotropaicometal/
