Black Salvation is a German psychedelic doom trio, formed in 2009. The band is highly influenced by good old handmade rock music, drenched with a slightly taste of experimental and sinister elements.
Lunia is their first EP CD with four tracks connected through atmospheric and ambient parts. The album kicks-off with a sinister opening haunting track “Inhale Lucifer”, maybe a cliché title, but the song is actually very good with this driving main riff that is been player over and over again. Second song is also a self-titled one, being a completely improvised track. Then follows “Doomed Utopia”, that is a dedicated track which is a bit dull, yet reminding me of early Black Sabbath. Finally follows the closing track “Ghosts of Dying Time” which is the final catharsis with two chapters and 10 minutes of paralysing and mesmerising closing.
The production is not something I would give them credit for. I know that many of this kinds of records are deliberately produced this way, but often irritating and wrongly placed notes and repetitive riffs are just not my cup of the. It rather sounds like the whole opus has been recorded in a basement of even dark tomb and one can almost hear it.
The album is also a bit longer than I prefer, but there are certainly still some elements of this music that I like. Esp. Black Sabbath-esque music with brilliants riffing and lots of messy and experimental elements is something I enjoyed a lot.
If you are a fan of psychedelic/jazzy/experimental and ambient doom metal, Lunia is just a perfect record for you – one that is ready to get explored and listened to numerous times.
