My knowledge of this German-based (Neuwied) one-man project was none-existing for only a couple of days ago. After listening to his new material Durch Die Stille, they are still unknown to me, but at least now I have an idea what their music is about. You can find only limited and short information about the band online and even the press material was written in German. However, it didn’t stop me to explore their minds and their sound.
Vargnatt (free translation; ‘winter grave’) is, as briefly mentioned above, one-man project of Evae, formed in summer of 2006. From the very formation of the band, Evae’s main intention was to create very intense and atmospheric soundscapes full of melancholia, sorrow and hope. With this new EP entitled Durch Die Stille he just succeeded in doing so.
Even his 2007 debut Wintergrab got very good feedback, even though I find it hard to compare it to Durch Die Stille. What I can tell is that Vargnatt is still creating sorrowful, melancholic and depressive black & doom metal with few rougher and angrier parts. Overall on this five-tracker, song-writing and production are good and crystal clear. Despite of the messy and desolate nature of this material, all of the instruments can be equally heard and fitting naturally into the music.
