I’ve always been a sacker for the whole Hair/Glam/Sleaze Rock scene and bands like Motley Crüe and Skid Row. It is all about pussy, fast ride, drugs, fun and rock ‘n’ roll. That’s why I still get nostalgic each time a band like this hit me with their music. It kinds of leave me wanting for more, an inner desire to travel back in time.
On Top is a retro and hard-hitting power trio from Philadelphia. The band was actually created in late 2008, so having released a Demo and EP prior to this full-length is quite impressive.
Top Heavy consists of eleven ripping tracks, four of which are re-recorded versions of older songs found on the first two independent releases. Their style is a dirty rock n’ roll with passion, attitude, spirit and authentic 80s metal flare.
Top Heavy contains 11 songs that are a combination of speed, heaviness and with a lot of melody. It is all spiced-up by some sex soaked, yet partly cliché lyrics, best exemplified with a song “Hot N Wet”.
"She's a bombshell blone You think she wants you By night she'll have you conned Yea doin' things you' never do She's done it all many times before Just another night on her bedroom floor..."
The opus starts with an instrumental intro before the first punch in your balls with a song called “Into The Night”. Immediately, the memories of the late 80s were brought back to my mind. The album ends with maybe the best song, a fast one “Success and Excess”.
This band truly writes juvenile lyrics followed by ‘in-your-face’ killer vocals, creating tons of power chords, delivering an intense drumming and surprisingly big amount of decent melodic and technical solos.
If you’re a fan of hard rock and bands such as legendary Motley Crüe, Dokken, LA Guns, Ratt, W.A.S.P., Van Halen or Queensrÿche then you must check this band out now! You would simply love to have it in your collection, before the band strike again with a sophomore release later this year.
