Au Ellai is the final part in a trilogy which started with Ea Taesse and continued with Ea II. While this Russian band’s debut Ea Taesse was light and positive record, its follow-up Ea II was much darker and more severe. Now with Au Ellai the epilogue of EA (Ea is a god in the Akkadian and Babylonian and under the name Enki in the Sumerian mythology.) - trilogy is a path to the roots of the World.
The whole idea behind the creation of this band was that it should be based on the sacral texts of ancient civilizations. Furthermore, the band uses a dead language as a part of their archaeological study. See, this is a very intelligent and dedicated band that knows exactly where they are heading to.
On this new CD the band only included three tracks, but very long and slow ones. It is a down-tempo epic, enigmatic, funeral doom. It is filled with nice atmospherics and ambient elements making it a pleasure to listen to. Since it is a piece of Funeral Doom the band’s mood is pessimistic and with a serious and sorrowful attitude.
One can hear many clean-toned guitar parts that are catchy and melodic too. The vocals however are more death-metal oriented being angry and rasping. Keyboard/piano is the most dominant instrument creating the underlying melancholy and sadness for this kind of music. Furthermore the band includes synthesised violins and other more or less odd effects as they are eager to show-off all of their musical abilities. To times it tends to get a little too-much for me, as it sounds melo-dramatic and confusing. In other words; I think that the band should have focused more on the classic Doom instruments and sounds, rather than creating this messy sound. All of the positive things that I’ve mentioned just earlier are not enough substitutes for lack of direction and structure in theme and music.
If you've heard Ea Taesse and Ea II already, then I would suggest you to complete your collection and give Ea Ellai a chance. However, if you just want to get familiar with this kind of music, then I would say that Ea Ellai is maybe not the most suitable place to begin.
