Spinefarm Records, 28th January 2009
Spinefarm Records have obviously specialized in releasing all kinds of metal releases coming from their home soil – Finland. The scene in this Nordic country is one of the most vibrant and diverse on the entire planet. One of the bands that I have never heard of before is Deathlike Silence, named after a line from the movie ‘Dracula’. The band was formed in Turku in 2003 and after a debut album Vigor Mortis in 2007 the band is now ready with their second full-length release entitled Saturday Night Evil.
The band’s own description of their music is ‘grave digger metal’, but my job is to describe it a bit further. For me it is a piece of gothic music with some melodic heavy metal/hard rock influences. The best thing that can be said about this record is a voice of their female singer – it is deep but very sexy. But it is not all, there’s yet another lady in this Finnish six-piece, on a keyboards. With its bombastic choruses and shredding guitar solos on most of the 11 songs played here brings back memories of the 80s where metal was played for the masses. Maybe best song on the entire album, or at least the biggest surprise, is the cover track of Mike Oldfield/Maggie Reilly. Other lyrical themes are spinning around subjects of a romantic horror stories & gothic themes.
It is nice, nostalgic and yet modern. I never thought I would enjoy this record as much as I did. Contact info: www.deathlikesilence.com
